He’s been through the mill, starting out at the age of 23, he built a $180 million business, running 300 staff in 9 offices (including 2 internationally). He had $25mn in real estate and life was grand. In 2009 all that changed when the GFC hit – the bank took the lot, and the family ended up with zero.
After borrowing $10,000 from a friend in 2010 the family started from scratch all over again. They are now proud owners of 3 very profitable businesses. As business owners we can be swayed by bright shiny objects that take away our focus putting us on a trajectory where we either are making a lot of revenue and no profit or, are struggling to work out where we fit and therefore what our plan should be going forward.
Richard believes, “The only way through the door is the front door.” Understanding which door to select, how to determine who to speak with and how to knock on that door tirelessly, is a skill many private and family business owners seek to understand, he’ll share this with us how he picked himself up and what steps he took.
