Former Chief Economist, NAB

Alan served as Chief Economist at NAB for 33 years, leading the bank’s local and global economic and financial market forecasts. He played a key role in developing NAB’s widely followed Monthly Business Survey and pioneered the use of NAB’s balance sheet data to deliver near real-time insights into consumer behaviour, business cash flows and unemployment trends—data now shared with Government, the RBA, ABS and other public sector bodies. Prior to joining NAB in 1992, Alan spent 15 years at the Commonwealth Treasury, including as Senior Advisor overseeing forecasting and modelling, and four years as Australia’s representative to the OECD in Paris. Widely recognised for his expertise in economic forecasting and monetary policy, Alan retired from NAB in March 2025 and is now exploring new opportunities in the economic sector.
